Protecting People. Protecting Elephants.
A New Crisis for Africa’s Elephants
Poaching is no longer the greatest threat to elephants. Human–elephant conflict now kills more elephants than poaching.
Across Kenya, Uganda, and Gabon, elephants raid crops for the same reason people grow them: they are rich in calories and nutrients. But when a single elephant destroys a family’s entire harvest in one night, farmers face hunger, lost income, and danger. Retaliation often follows.
A single night of crop-raiding can destroy a family’s entire annual income. Smart fences stop that - safely, instantly, and humanely.
Three Countries. Three Different Challenges. One Co-existence Model That Works.
Human-elephant conflict looks different in every landscape. But across Kenya, Uganda, and Gabon, one solution consistently saves lives:
Smart Electric Fences designed for Coexistence.
Here’s how your support creates impact on the ground in Africa - today:
These numbers prove one thing: coexistence isn’t a theory.
It’s happening. It’s working. And with your support, we can scale it.
350 000+
People protected from human–elephant conflict.
110 000+
Elephants shielded from retaliatory killings.
440+ km
Smart fences built and maintained.
95%
Protected farmers can now feed their families.
90% - 97%
Reduction in crop-raids where fences are installed.
3000+
Fence goal for 2026 in Gabon to protect every family that needs one.
Kenya: Closing the Final 60 km
Laikipia is one of Africa’s most important elephant landscapes. Most of its protective boundary is now in place. What remains is a 60 km stretch still unfenced.
It’s in this hotspot area that human–elephant conflict continues. Nearly 30% of the collared bulls in this area have died this year — a mortality rate higher than the peak poaching years.
By completing the last 60 km, we will:
Reduce crop-raiding to 90%+ (from the current 70%)
Protect tens of thousands of smallholder farms
Stabilise one of Kenya’s most important wildlife systems
Impact at a Glance in Kenya:
70% average reduction in raids where fencing is complete
90%+ projected reduction with the final 60 km
From 2028, the Suyian Conservancy will fund US$250,000 per year for maintenance. Our immediate need is the bridge finance to get there.
Elephants learn. Our fences learn faster.
Uganda: Fencing That Transforms Lives
Since 2018, Space for Giants and the Uganda Wildlife Authority have built 173 km of solar-electric fences around Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks. Now, the goal is to extend protection to vulnerable communities nationwide.
The impact has been immediate and visible:
Thousands of rural households protected
Farmers reclaiming land abandoned for decades
Stronger food security
97% reduction in crop-raids
70% improvement in attitudes toward elephants
Your support strengthens the national rollout with essential technical oversight, training, and standards enforcement.
2026–2027 Priorities:
1 vehicle + 2 technical staff
National training & standards
Rapid-response capacity building
Gabon: Protecting Farms, One by One
In Gabon, elephants roam almost everywhere. The Human–Elephant Coexistence Project supports the Government of Gabon to address a national crisis: thousands of crop raids, rising human deaths, and increasing calls for elephant culling.
The solution is simple and powerful:
· Innovative, low-cost mobile electric fences
· ~1,863 fences protecting ~3,000 hectares
· 27,000 people benefitting
And the impact is extraordinary:
· 1,813 elephant attempts recorded
· 1,704 successfully repelled: 94% success rate
· 95% of farmers can feed their families after fence installation
· 70% believe fences reduce elephant killings
· 3,630 new farmer requests for protection
One fence in Gabon costs US$3,000.
One family protected. One and elephant saved.
Real-Time Intelligence. Human Response. Long-Term Sustainability
Space for Giants’ model combines:
Fence engineering tailored to each landscape.
Real-time LoRa sensors detecting voltage drops in real time.
Drones, radios, and 24/7 rapid-response teams.
Command centres.
Local training and employment.
