We work to make it easier for increasing populations of people to coexist with wildlife, by building fences designed to stop elephants breaking into cropland. Then elephants are no longer the enemies of the people who can protect them best.
ELEPHANT PROOF FENCES
As Africa's population increases, farmers are expanding their fields into what was wildlife territory, bringing elephants ever close to crops they love to feed on. Our pioneering 'short-post' fence designs keep them away from fields, saving subsistence farmers’ livelihoods.

Since Space for Giants started, we have collared close to 50 elephants to monitor their movements. This helps inform our pioneering research on elephant behaviour and their interactions in increasingly-human landscapes. This information is important for authorities to choose where to approve development, and where to leave land wild
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Space for Giants is one of the world’s premier research organisations on human-wildlife conflict and elephant movements. We are rooted in this science, growing out of our founder's PhD at Cambridge University and since adding a leading suite of PhDs and Masters’ theses on this topic. As previously wild land in Africa becomes more developed, our insights will be increasingly crucial to inform policy.
